It's awards season, and no other award is considered as paramount as the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars.
The problem that most folks have with the Oscars is that there are just too many films to watch before the ceremony. Even if you've done really well to try & watch everything, you'll still have moments when a movie title is announced, and you'll say, "Huh?" There just doesn't seem to be a way to watch it all.

But can you at least get some of the big contenders under your belt before the Best Picture award is handed out? Of course you can, and Best Picture is kind of up for grabs because of the stellar movies that have graced movie theaters. If you're a movie buff & dedicate moviegoer, this has been one heck of a year for films that are amazing.
What's more, the genre hasn't really had anything to do with how good a movie is or not. You genuinely have great movies across the board, which means that whichever movie wins the Oscar at the end of the night really stood out.

Here are five movies that are sure to be contenders for the Academy's big prize:

A Star Is Born - Yes, this isn't the first time this movie has been made, but for many, this is now a definitive version. There seems to be a rawness to the performances, and even though the story ends the same way, this version's tragedy seems to hurt more.

Bohemian Rhapsody - This film takes a look at the life of Freddie Mercury, former frontman for the band, Queen. Though it's been almost thirty years since his passing, he remains an enigma. This movie aims to give the public a chance to see more of this mysterious figure & how Queen became legendary.

Green Book - Exploring a friendship forged in the racially hostile Deep South, this movie gives the public a chance to learn more shameful elements about American history that should not be forgotten.

Roma - An intimate story from the life of director Alfonso Cuaron, this movie has really caused ripples in the industry because of the involvement of Netflix, its indie film credentials, and how much of a hauntingly beautiful movie it really is.

First Reformed - This is one that has truly surprised critics and audiences alike because of the weighty issues tackled in the main story.
Violence, climate change, and crisis of faith are just some of what viewers are in store for.

Even if you did want to check out every movie released in the last year (or period of eligibility for the Oscars), you'd have too many films to watch.

Perhaps this is why passions run deep when the movie you think should win doesn't. You made a concerted effort to watch a movie, and it struck a chord inside of you. You gave your heart to it, and as far as you were concerned, everyone needed to see it.
It became your own private masterpiece, and if someone didn't like it, well they just didn't get it.

So as you cozy up to watch this year's Academy Awards, take solace in knowing that every movie up for an award has merit, and if your darling comes up short, no one can ever take away the visceral connection you had to it.
