By focusing on issues and communities local to them, independent and alternative media outlets are helping diversify the coverage of news. These smaller groups often focus on a single group or topic within a certain issue. A small group may decide on your editorial decisions, and they often lack the resources or capacity necessary to hire professional journalists. Delegates from these groups are often also involved in social activism. They are activists by nature and their work often adheres with the normative values that social movement theory emphasizes, such as deliberative participation and alternative narratives.

It is critical to understand how the political context shapes these values and the organizational practices that support these values. The papers in this special issue shed some light on this process of transformation.

In order to understand and study media, political systems are crucial. Different political theories offer different views on democracy, the public sphere, and how these outlets are to function, which determines their interpretation. 2019; Figenschou and Frischlich 2019). Researchers may emphasize the importance of citizen media, which promotes participation in democratic processes. Others focus on diversity and media coverage as a way to counter ideologic hegemony.

Another important question about alternative media is the definition. Other scholars use an analytical framework in order to determine how this alternative media differs from mainstream media and whether its influence goes beyond mainstream.

Aslan Ozgul and Veneti (2022) investigate the changes in organizational structures and power relationships within large-scale alternative media projects in Turkey, Greece and other countries. They found that some maintain a collective and participative culture as their staff increases and they produce more content. Their study shows that this shift may have an impact on whether these projects maintain their "alternativeness", but become more similar to professional actors.

Block Club Chicago is one example of this increasing recognition. It reports on local news and issues in Chicago neighborhoods. This organization illustrates how community journalism can bridge gaps among residents, promote civic participation and give individuals the power to make informed choices regarding their lives.
